Outcomes

Substantial built a fully functional iOS app in just 3 weeks for a beta program to test demand and validate The Stranger team’s goals and expectations. Built with React Native, the app includes a collection of editorial articles, “things to-do” recommendations, and detailed event information, pulled from The Stranger’s vast archive. After beta launch, Substantial and The Stranger set out for a wider launch that included an Android version. We continue to make the app more robust, adding new features such as event reminders, favorites, UX usability improvements, and more on the way.

Approach

In addition to news, Pulitzer prize winning alt-weekly The Stranger is renown for their cultural coverage, which spans everything from the biggest mainstream events to the most fringe happenings. Newcomers and natives alike need search no further than The Stranger to find out what’s happening in Seattle.

Substantial and The Stranger worked together on The Savage Lovecast app, so they were no strangers to one another. The Stranger’s event archives and editorial content was already online, but wasn’t in the most convenient format for people on the go. The Things To Do app extends the reach of that pre-existing content while maintaining its design aesthetic. Using React Native, the team maximized reuse of their work to make both iOS and Android versions, balancing that with native push notifications and web views to reduce the amount of content reformatting. The team also had to optimize performance for many app elements. The app was ready for beta launch in just three weeks.
